Litter

Why worry about litter?

Millions of dollars are spent picking up litter each year.  Our state's natural beauty is diminished by a few individuals who break the law by tossing trash wherever they please.

The Recycling and Local Assistance Branch began tracking the cost and volume of litter in 2001. Litter collection costs totaled $8,846,568.25 in 2007, an average cost of 71 cents per pound.  The majority of items found on roadways are plastic bottles and food containers. The chart below reflects the number of bags of litter collected and the amount spent on litter for calendar years 2001-2007.
