The Local Assistance Section (LAS) provides support to local governments and the general public on proper solid waste management practices including: waste reduction and recycling, solid waste collection and disposal practices, litter control, environmental education and enforcement of solid waste laws. We administer grants, conduct workshops, provide educational materials and consult with local officials on solid waste planning issues. Chris Fitzpatrick is the section supervisor.
Counties are required to formalize solid waste management goals and objectives into plans that are updated every five years. We are currently reviewing solid waste management plan updates for calendar years 2008 through 2012.
Site visits are conducted once a year by LAS staff to determine compliance with county solid waste management plans. Click here to review a list of planning assistants and their coverage areas.
Counties are required to report quantitative data annually using DEP form 6061. We are required to compile the data and report to the legislature by July 1 of each year. Click here to view the 2006 Statewide Solid Waste Management Report.
