The 10th annual Commonwealth Cleanup Week will be March 23-29, 2008.
The 1998 Kentucky General Assembly (House Joint Resolution 121) designated the fourth week in March as an opportunity for Kentuckians to participate in "activities that highlight the natural beauty of their communities." The event includes an art contest and cleanup activities.
For the 2008 art contest, we want to focus on waste reduction – cutting down on the amount of trash that goes in the garbage and on to the landfill.
We are asking students to create a 21st century version of a World War II resource conservation poster – Use it up, wear it out, make it do! The 1940s poster showed a woman sewing a patch on her husband’s pants while he mends a lawnmower. It was one in a series produced by the U.S. Office of War Information.
