Federal Registers Online

The Federal Register is a tool that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses to notify the public of rulemakings, Environmental Impact Statements, public hearings and other actions of general or specific interest. This document is published every weekday, excluding federal holidays.

Searching the Entire Federal Register

All Federal Registers, including those containing U.S. EPA notices and notices from all other federal agencies, can be viewed online: http://www.gpoaccess.gov/fr/index.html

This link will connect you to the Federal Register home page of the U.S. Government Printing Office. However, this is a very busy Web site. You may get an error message if you are trying to access the site at peak times when all incoming lines are busy.

Once you do connect, you will see that the instructions on that page for accessing specific Federal Registers are fairly self-explanatory. Type in a keyword or group of words. You can also search within specific date ranges or limit your search to certain types of notices (e.g., final rules, proposed rules, corrections, or presidential documents).

EPA Federal Registers Searches

If you are only interested in notices related to the U.S. EPA, these notices can be viewed online at the following address: http://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr/

You can search this EPA subset of the Federal Registers by using keywords, pulling up specific dates and searching in various topics (e.g., air, water, or waste).

Automatic Receipt of EPA Notices by E-mail

If you would like the daily Federal Register delivered to your e-mail box, you may subscribe to any or all of the 12 environmental issue listservers.

Information on how to subscribe and unsubscribe is online at http://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr/subscribe.htm

Notices are sent out on the mailing list the same day they are published in the hard copy Federal Register. EPA extracts documents directly from the Federal Register, without alteration or intervention except subject identification and automated breaking of oversized files. This e-mail process is one-directional, meaning that you cannot reply to Federal Register notices electronically.

This electronic information dissemination process preserves the integrity of the documents to the best of EPA's ability; however, EPA disclaims any omissions, file structure errors, or deficiencies as being errors of the Government Printing Office rather than EPA. EPA notes that wide tables require setting word processing software to a 278-character field width for proper display.
